Performance Mindfulness.
Sophie feels very strongly about mental health, particularly for performers. As a performer herself, she understands the amazing but challenging nature of the performance industry and how it can significantly impact one's mental health.
Every day, millions of people perform in various settings, such as classrooms, courtrooms, offices, operating theatres, or on stage. Although performing can be extremely rewarding, it also brings challenges that can be exacerbated by negative self-talk and self-doubt. As a teacher, Sophie is equally passionate about her students' mental health and recognises that each student is unique and works differently.
Sophie offers one-on-one sessions where she shares her experiences and self-help tips to help performers and students navigate through the industry. She provides a comfortable space where they can express themselves freely and without reservation.
Sophie is currently immersing herself in a course with The Skills Network, focusing on the mental health of performers and young people and has now completed her TQ Level 2 qualification in understanding children and young people's mental health.
Supporting Young Performers' Mental Health and Wellbeing
With a TQ Level 2 qualification in understanding children and young people's mental health, I am committed to nurturing the overall wellbeing of young performers. My training equipped me to recognise mental health warning signs, provide emotional support, and guide students to resources.
Performing arts training can be mentally taxing for students facing high pressure to succeed, challenging feedback on appearance or talent, and instructor cruelty in some cases. I believe we have a duty to raise the next generation of artists with care, not cruelty.
In my teaching and mentoring I aim to foster self-confidence and joy in performing. Lessons focus on celebrating unique talents over rigid ideals. I nurture emotional intelligence and mindfulness practices that serve long-term mental health. Sessions balance high standards with compassion.
Performing should uplift performers’ lives. As an instructor, I hope to sustain students’ passion by creating a safe space for creatives to thrive. My mental health training allows me to approach instruction with empathy and students’ complete wellbeing in mind. Let’s reimagine arts education to be mentally healthy for all.
